The right backpacking boots
for your feet

Make sure your choice of backpacking boots are broken in and appropriate before you have to walk in the wilderness. Your footwear is a critical part of your outdoor apparel.

To get blisters or a twisted ankle is a nightmare for a hiker. Take care of your feet. Keep your feet clean, first aid kit with thin blister pads or moleskin to protect your feet.

Designs

Backpacking and hiking boots have different designs, above the ankle, ankle and below the ankle (like a conventional shoe).

Above the ankle

Above the ankle boots offer the best ankle support and are a must have when you are backpacking with a heavy load. Above the ankle boots also give good protection against water and mud. Due to their heavier weight and stiff soles, most people will find that a heavy backpacking boot is not comfortable for light backpacking.

Ankle

Ankle boots are simply a compromise between ankle and above the ankle boots. They are designed for backpacking with light to moderate backpacking loads. Primarily over easy to moderate terrain.

Below the ankle

A below the ankle boots are then a good choice due to it's light, comfortable weight and easy break in periods.

Materials

There are many choices of both synthetic and natural materials for backpacking boots. Full grain leather is the most expensive of the natural materials. However, full grain leather backpacking boots are extremely water-resistant and durable.

The right footwear

To be able to choose the right footwear you need to answer the question: What do you plan to use your boots for? If you need boots for use on rough surfaces when carrying a heavy load your "only" option is above the ankle boots. You will need the ankle support. Above the ankle boots are typically constructed out of full leather or high quality synthetics.

Furthermore, look for linings and waterproof features. Above the ankle boots when properly designed and treated can be used as a four season boot.

A very good complement to heavy hiking boots are sandals. They are lightweight and very comfortable to use, special at the camp.

If you plan backpacking in more extreme conditions, consider models special designed for those environments.

Pick the right backpacking socks

wool socks
To keep your feet warm and dry and to avoid blisters you need socks that enhance moisture-wicking, reduce friction and combines softness with lightweight, quick-drying properties.

Materials used for socks are cotton blends, synthetic fiber and wool. Wool is a good choice to keep your feet warm and dry. Aside from managing moisture and insulating the foot, wool also holds its shape better than other materials. Always have a dry pair of socks handy.
