Backpacking gear list

by Steve
(Seattle)

This page provides my backpacking gear list that has worked well for me for three seasons backpacking trips. The gear I need for a two day backpacking trip is the same I need for three days, or 10 days or more. . . Of course I need more food and stove fuel for a longer trip.

A good rule to use is to start with nothing and ask yourself, "what do I absolutely need?".

Please, I appreciate all the feedback and comments I can get.

Equipment:

• backpack, waterproof pack cover
• sleeping bag + sleeping pad
• tent
• portable water filter bottle
• backpacking stove, fuel, cooking pot
• mug, fork, spoon, plate
• matches
• topo map + compass
• knife
• wilderness survival kit + first aid kit
• toothbrush, soap, comb
• toilet paper
• waterproof stuff sacks

Clothing Items:

• hiking boots + socks
• sandals
• pants + shorts
• underpant
• t-shirt
• long-sleeve shirt
• fleece sweater
• hat with brim + warm hat
• rain jacket + pants
• gloves
• bandana ("multi-purpose use"; towel, scarf . . )

Food:

How much food you need to pack depends, among others, on who you are and how long your trip will be.

Make sure you have the basic wilderness skills to safely enjoy your trip.

What does it all weigh ?
by: Todd Owen - Denver , Co

Nice list , very good set up too. As w what Clint said, I too always have a multitool w me, even a cheap 10 buck one is a good item to have. Unlike many ppl who swear by the purifying tabs, I prefer a drop or two of bleach , it goes a long long way plus it has first aid uses as well for infections. I carry a tiny bottle of it in an eye dropper. I see you have a mug ,cook set and plates. Check out a three in one mess kit that the French Army used. I have one myself its awesome cup, plate, skillet and they all have folding handles. My tiny Hexamine stove plus fuel and my Spork fit nicely into it. Heavy gauge steele too. Also, many ppl carry first aid kits w lots of stuff in them they will never use, I don't carry tons medical tape, they are bulky and are seldom used. Instead I have about 10 feet of Duct Tape ( 3M brand is the best ) I fold it into a nice two inch square, its water proof , hold up great plus it works super great for a blister on the feet. I believe we all carry what our environment dictates. These are just a few tips I wanted to share... Oh and as Melinda stated , Condoms ( non lubricated ) excellent for water storage, tourniquets, waterproofing small items as well as using as a sleeve over lacerations to keep out bacteria... Happy Survival to you all

Great basic list
by: Clint

That's a very strong basic list. You had a knife listed, but being a belt and suspenders type of person I try to always also have a multi-tool (with a plier capability). That way, you've got two blades to cut with and a pair of pliers to handle whatever may pop up on the trail.

Thanks again,
Clint
