Backpacking gear

What backpacking gear you take with you is largely a matter of personal taste and the type of wilderness trip you are taking, such as a day hike or a one week backpacking trip. Tailor your equipment to the environment you will encounter. It’s bad planning to bring the wrong type of equipment.

Packing what you need for a backpacking trip is always a challenge and each wilderness adventure has its own unique gear requirements. If you are going backpacking, you have to carry every item you pick, so the strategy is to only bring what you really will need, according to the expected environment and climate. As a rule of thumb, keep the maximum load to a limit of 30% of your body weight.

Miscellaneous gear

Do not overlook special gear you may need. For instance, sunglasses and sunscreen might not be critical for wandering through the woods, but they are essential in deserts, snow, or in high mountains where the atmosphere is thin. Sunburn can lead to dehydration and snow blindness can occur within less than an hour's exposure, though the symptoms may not show up until eight hours later.

What about safe drinking water? In the wild water is seldom pure so bring a portable water filter bottle. Excellent for wilderness backpackers.
