Lightweight backpacking tent

A backpacking tent is a critical piece of backpacking gear. In any wilderness situation, the weather can change suddenly for the worse within minutes. In fair weather most equipment works fine. However in tough and cold environments good design and high quality materials are required so that you can feel secure.

Your tent of choice has to be strong, reliable, comfortable, work well in variable weather conditions, and it should pitch without any fuss. In order to feel comfortable it's important that you remain dry and have enough of space.

What type of tent you need, of course, depend what you are going to use it for. There are different types and designs available on the market. Learn more about tent features.

Pitching

Pitching your tent should be as simple as possible. Both inner and outer parts have to go up together, so that you can do it on your own. Even in rough conditions, in the cold and with your gloves on. It is never easy to do this in stormy weather, so you should prepare yourself for it by practicing a few times in your back yard before you head for the wilderness.

Always check for sharp stones before pitching, not only are they uncomfortable they could damage your groundsheet.

Care

Tents should be thoroughly dried before they are stored. Just like a sleeping bag, let your tent hang out after each trip. Also dry the poles and pegs, they can corrode if stored wet.

If it needs washing - which is rare - wash it gently with warm water. Don't put it in a washing machine.

If there are any damage do the repairs before storing, don't leave it until you want to use it again.

Zippers can be a weakness. Treat the zippers with care and keep them clean by applying a small brush every now and then.
