Camping Tent Heaters

by Todd Owen
(Denver)

I had to share this little bit of info with you guys. So Christmas morning my girl says "lets go camping", well I, not being the guy to ever say no to camping agreed.(We always have the gear ready after each use and stored in one spot at all times) So within 2 hours, we were in the mountains of Colorado near Nevadville, Co an old ghost town seldom traveled by most people.

I get the fire going and realize that in the 30 minutes we've been there the temp has slowly started to drop. Well, two weeks earlier I had gotten a Tent Heater so we could camp more into the year and not freeze to death doing it. So here I sit in the tent getting it together, which took all of 2 minutes. It's The Coleman Black Cat 1,500 BTU model. I push the button and let it go. Well, I decide to stoke the fire outside for a minute, and we decided to call it quits when we saw the temp was now at 23 degrees.

Well thinking the tent would be nice and warm we got into the tent..... NADA !!!!! It was 5 degrees warmer in there than outside. I mention all of this for one simple reason .... CHECK YOUR GEAR before you head out and need to rely upon it.

Thankfully, we had very good sleeping bags and a couple of space blankets. We made it thru the night and still had an enjoyable time together. As for the heater itself, it was returned the next day.

I'm looking for something that can heat a small two man tent yet be light enough to be carried if need be on a hike.....

Happy Survival to you all and my this New year see all of you never needing to survive in the Wild.
