Backpacking and hiking clothes
What particular articles of backpacking and hiking clothes you choose will depend on your intended level of physical activity and the anticipated weather conditions. If you follow the layering principle, you should be able to equip yourself with the right outdoor clothes for any type of weather.

Shirt
You should always include a long-sleeve shirt to your outdoor clothing. Besides keeping you warm when it's chilly, a long-sleeve shirt will protect you from intense sun or insects. Ligthweight moisture wicking polyester is often the best choice.
Pants
For pants and shorts, your options are nylon or cotton canvas. Pants made of cotton, such as blue jeans, takes forever to dry, and you get cold very soon. Nylon is breathable, wicks moisture and dries quickly. Canvas is sturdy and very durable, but doesn't wick moisture and dry slowly.
Convertible pants has legs that zip off to turn into shorts. These are a great space-saving option, and they're versatile enough for nearly any situation or climate.
Headgear
A headgear is a natural part of your outdoor clothing gear and essential for both sun protection and to keep you warm in cold weather. Use a wide-brimmed hat to protect both your face and neck from the sun. Baseball caps are great when carrying a backpack. In cold weather a wool stocking cap or balaclava will keep your head (and ears) warm.
Extra outdoor clothing
Don't forget when you plan your wilderness trip that you need a change of clothing and extra warm garments for when you stop.
