To keep you safe in the wilderness, you need to be able to decide your position in the terrain and find your way to your goal. You can use electronic navigation equipment, or find your way by observing the signs of nature, but don't forget your map and compass.


Read the terrain

Wherever possible, navigate by using natural topographic features. Always keep an eye on the landscape and watch where you are going. Keep yourself oriented so that at any time you can point out your actual position on your map. Most wilderness orientation, navigation, and route finding are done by simply looking at your surroundings and comparing them with your map.
