Guidelines on loading backpacks
Loading backpacks correct is important. How you load your backpack will affect how easy it is to carry and how easy it will be to find your gear. Many backpackers may have experienced the frustration of needing the one item that is buried at the bottom of the backpack. With a little bit of planning you will save time and frustration when out on the trail if you load your backpack appropriately. · The first thing you should put in is the last thing you will take out. · Make sure frequently used items (as rain gear) are easily accessed. · To save room put fluffy stuff, such as sleeping bags, in compression sacks. · Use nylon stuff sacks to organize gear. · Keep fuel bottles away from food. · Make sure you balance your load. To distribute the weight properly, you should pack your heaviest items closest to your back and in the middle portion of your backpack. In addition, make sure the weight on both sides of the backpack is equal. Carrying an uneven load can be harmful to your back. It is much easier to carry a heavier weight if you load your backpack evenly. · Your maximum load should never exceed 30% of your body weight. · Cut weight by bringing just what you will need. · Practice loading your backpack at home. · Find a setup that works best for you - and stick with it.
