Guidelines on loading backpacks
Loading backpacks correct is important. Because how you load your backpack will affect how it will carry and how easy it will be to find your backpacking gear.
Loading options
Backpacks generally have three loading options - top loading, panel style loading or hybrid style loading.
Top loading
Top loading packs have one big opening at the top that provides the only means of access to the main compartment of the bag. The lack of front access zippers makes top loaders durable and rugged, as you don't have to worry about zippers jamming or breaking. A top loading model offers the greatest capacity but require careful organization before you start loading the pack.
Panel loading
Panel loading backpacks has a large zipper that allows faster and easier access to the main compartment of the pack. The drawback with panel loading is that you have to worry about zippers jamming or breaking, special if the pack is too full.
Hybrid style loading
The hybrid style loading model provides both top and panel loading. Giving you the advantage of both top and panel loading. Still the zipper is a weak spot.
Backpacking tips
I guess most hikers have experienced the frustration of needing the one item that is buried at the bottom of the backpack. With a little bit of planning you will save time and frustration when out on the trail.
- The first thing you should put in - is the last thing you will take out.
- Make sure frequently used items (as rain gear) are easily accessed.
- Find a setup that works best for you - and stick with it.
- To save room put fluffy stuff as sleeping bag in compression sacks.
- Use nylon stuff sacks to organize gear.
- Make sure you balance your load.
- Your maximum load should never exceed 30% of your body weight.
- Cut weight by bringing just what you will need. Think!
- Keep fuel bottles away from food.
- Use a waterproof pack cover to keep your backpack and gear dry.
- Don't forget your
survival kits.
